STEEL HERITAGE PACKAGE

(Limited Availability:  Tour Dates – June 14, July 12, Aug 9, Sept 13)

Once known as the “Smoky City,” Pittsburgh was justly famous for its steel making prowess.  Only a generation ago, massive steel mills, miles long, lined the rivers just yards from downtown Pittsburgh.  With the collapse of the Western Pennsylvania steel industry in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, most of these mills were dismantled, leaving little of that rich industrial heritage.

Fortunately, some remnants of this gritty, hardworking way of life have been preserved, and The Priory’s Steel City Heritage Package offers a chance to step back in time to witness the era.  The Steel City Heritage Package includes:

  • A one night stay for two in a Priory Hotel standard room;
  • A basket of Pittsburgh, including special Pittsburgh-area treats and souvenirs such as Heinz memorabilia, a Terrible Towel, Sabio Springs water, Iron City Beer nuts, Clark Bars, Priory Fine Pastries cookies, and other fun items;
  • A copy of our own tale of historic restoration:  The Story of a Resurrection:  Pittsburgh’s Grand Hall at The Priory

Rate:  $220.00 plus tax.

Note:  The Carrie Furnaces is a heavily industrialized site.  Please dress accordingly. Heels and/or open-toed shoes will not be permitted.  At this time, Carrie Furnace is not wheel chair accessible.

1. Carrie Furnace Hardhat Tour
http://www.popcitymedia.com/features/0606riverssteel.aspx, featuring an insider’s look at the Monongahela Valley’s oldest standing blast furnaces (formerly part of U.S. Steel’s Homestead Works), offers a unique journey through Pittsburgh’s industrial history.
The “Hard Hat” tour begins at the Pump House, site of the 1892 Battle of Homestead, where you will board a van for the short trip to the Carrie Furnace site.
          Disembark at the west entrance of the Carrie Furnaces and walk with your guide into the Ore Yards where hundreds of tons of raw materials were off loaded from barge and rail cars to feed the blast furnaces that smelted  iron 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
From the Ore Yard, the guide will lead your group through the towering Hot Stoves, the “lungs of the blast furnace” that blew super-heated air into the furnaces to begin the smelting process.
          The next stop will be the Cast House where men and molten iron met each time the furnace was tapped.  The flow of molten iron from the cast house would fill waiting Torpedo Cars for the trip across the Rankin Hot Metal Bridge to the Homestead Works where the steel making process was completed.
         The last stop on the tour is an original Torpedo Car used at the Carrie site that is currently on display to the public.

2.         Bost Building Museum
This National Historic Landmark served as headquarters for the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steelworkers during the dramatic 1892 lockout and strike at the Homestead Works.  The historic structure was restored by the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area and opened to the public as a Visitors Center.  The Bost Building features restored rooms used by union leaders during 1892 Battle of Homestead and changing exhibits on region’s industrial and cultural heritage.
