Theme: Welcome to Northern Italia

Joe Barsotti, fresh from a trip to Italy to visit some of these vineyards, will take us on a virtual trip through the Northern winemaking regions of that country, weaving in tales of those winemakers he met and the location-specific varietals that produce these distinctive wines. .

Wines to be Tasted: Bava Gavi di Gavi Cor de Chasse (Piemonte 2012); Bava Barbera d'Asti (Piemonte 2012); I Fabbri Chianti Classico Red Label (Toscana 2012); Bava Rosetta Malvasia di Castelnuovo (Piemonte)

North Side Sandwich Week Face Off

The Priory's Grand Hall will be hosting the fourth annual North Side Sandwich Week competition.  The event features sandwich samplings by the North Side's greatest sandwich purveyors, including Peppi's, Max's Allegheny Tavern, the James Street Gastropub, and the Modern Cafe.  Beer from Penn Brewery is included in the ticket price.  Tickets sell out quickly, so purchase now.  Tickets are $25 apiece, and may be purchased by visiting sandwichweek.pittsburghnorthside.com or click here.

While their products many times use the same grapes, the wines of France and California, for a variety of reasons, have very distinctive styles and flavors. Lee Kuehn will compare and contrast four wines from Central and Northern California and four from France which demonstrate the similarities, and the differences, of the wines of these regions.

July 14 is Bastille Day, and what better way to celebrate the second great revolution of the people than to raise a glass in honor of our friends the French.  We’ll be tasting four wines from four different regions of France, from the Loire Valley to Beaujolais.

Theme: The Champagne of Spain Will Always Keep You Sane

Admittedly, it's a pretty lame rhyme but on the bright side this tasting does feature a fantastic Spanish sparkling wine, along with three other amazing offerings from the up and comping wine growing regions of Spain. Wine host Joe Barsotti has been a pioneer in bringing fine Spanish wines to the United States, and he is featuring four wines you won't see anywhere else.

Wines to Be Tasted: Finca Hispana Xarello (Penedes 2013); Finca Hispana Cava Brut Imperial N/V, (Penedes); Tandem Ars in Vitro (Navarra 2011); Vina Hispana Garnacha - Carignan (Priorat 2011).

In Italy’s wine growing regions, September is a special time, as that’s when the grapes are harvested.  Grape Harvest Festivals are plentiful, and, shockingly, much wine is consumed during the celebration.  While we’re not in Italia, we’ll do as the Italians do

Host:  Nick Biondi, Majestic Wines and Spirits

Theme:   Meet the Wines of Franklin Tate Estates  (Note that this Tasting features three red wines and one white)

Franklin Tate Winery is one of the pioneering winemakers of Australia.  Located on the West Coast of Australia, about 5 hours drive South of Perth, Franklin Tate’s vineyards in the Margaret Valley benefit from a temperate Indian Ocean climate and relatively dry soils.  Their wines, reflecting the experience of many years of winemaking, have won numerous awards, including twice winning the “Most Outstanding Red Wine” award at the Wine Magazine International Wine Challenge.  We met the third generation Tate family winemaker, Alex, in March and found some great conversation and great wines.  We’ll be sipping three Franklin Tate wines and one from Alexander Winery, a wine from Israel.

Second Annual Team Tassy Blackjack Spectacular

The Team Tassy Blackjack Spectacular turns the Priory's Grand Hall into a Havana casino circa 1955, with plenty of blackjack tables and the chance to win some unbelieveable prizes.  The event also features live entertainment and some fantastic Haitian food and tropical cocktails.  Tickets are not yet on sale.  Proceeds benefit Team Tassy, a 501(c)(3) organization devoted to helping the poorest of the poor in Port Au Prince, Haiti obtain and retain family sustaining jobs.

Host:  Kevin McCorkle, Southern Wine and Spirits

Theme:  The Wines of St. Michelle Wine Estates, Washington State

St. Michelle is the oldest winery in Washington State, and has been producing remarkable wines from different regions in Washington for more than 50 years.  Host Kevin McCorkle will discuss four St. Michelle offerings, comparing and contrasting the flavors and characteristics of these wines and the different regions within the state from which they come.
